It can be surprisingly difficult to summarize an argument in one sentence, but it’s worth the effort because summarizing forces us to synthesize a lot of information into its core content. You can’t do it if you don’t understand the text.

If your child is struggling with this skill, ask them to try summarizing the basic idea out loud before they write it down.
