Editing Puzzles
Sentence-level editing puzzles designed to reinforce foundational writing skills and grammar concepts.
Our free puzzles are perfect for parents, teachers, and tutors who are pressed for time but eager to have their students practice their writing skills. These short, sentence-level puzzles are efficient and effective ways to reinforce key writing skills. After all, even the brightest children need to train their eyes to notice mechanical mistakes in their writing, and they often need to develop a tolerance for editing. Editing these messy sentences forces them to notice the small details of punctuation, spelling, and grammar, and helps them develop an aversion to messy writing.

A sample puzzle from Puzzle Set 2: Spacing & Spelling. Can you figure out the answer? Yup! Some cats walk like old ninjas.
Sample puzzle
Part one: The first slide of each puzzle asks your student to click in the text box and fix the text. The cat gives clues to help your student figure out what the messy jumble of words says.
Part two: The second slide of each puzzle asks your student to move the lazy cat to check their answer. Though these puzzles may seem simple to us, children are often surprised by the many small details that escape their eyes when they edit. These puzzles are a great way to train them to notice problems and to develop tolerance for editing in general. On slide two, we also ask your student(s) to circle any writing conventions they need to remember if they missed edits; our writing rules are straightforward for students to understand. Use our video lesson series to teach the concepts in these puzzles, or use our puzzles to reinforce your existing lessons.
Please note that this is a free service, so we do not provide feedback on your student’s work, though we make it easy for you to do so.
